History of the American Hairless Terrier Breed. Where American Hairless Terriers came from
In 1972 a pair of Rat Terriers had a litter that produced one puppy that shed its entire coat shortly after birth.
This puppy was then further bred and produced litters of her own that had a few dogs here and there that turned out to be hairless.
Eventually, two of these hairless Rat Terriers were bred together and the American Hairless Terrier was born.
Because it took the breed so long to become established the American Kennel Club did not formally recognize the American Hairless Terrier until 2004.
This breed is a fun-loving, excitable, and interactive breed that prefers being with their families and cannot bear much alone-time.
American Hairless Terriers are great as companion animals and they rarely shed which is a plus for homes with allergies.
American Hairless Terriers are smaller-sized dogs and although great with children, should be supervised with them at all times to ensure that this breed isn’t trodden on or pushed off high edges.

What the American Hairless Terrier Looks Like
The American Hairless Terrier is a great dog for homes with allergies as there is little to no hair with this breed.
This is a smaller Terrier breed that has vibrant energy and happiness.
This little dog can be white, pink, or brown, and although called “hairless” can come in several different coat varieties including short and wired in rare instances.
Because the American Hairless Terrier is devoid pretty much entirely of hair, it is important to have their skin covered if they are in sunlight as direct exposure can cause terrible sunburns.
Repetitive exposure to too much sunlight for these dogs can also cause early skin cancers and other problems and should be avoided.
American Hairless Terriers need just as much exercise as others in the Terrier families to stay healthy.
Their coats take little to no grooming effort if they are truly hairless.

Every dog breed has its own set of health problems that it tends to develop. There is nothing like a perfect dog breed.
The American Hairless Terrier is prone to certain genetic health conditions. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) is an organization that keeps track of genetic health problems in dog breeds.
From the extensive records that the OFA keeps, the OFA knows what health problems each dog breed is naturally prone to develop.
Hence, the OFA recommends which health screening breeders should perform on a dog breed to make sure that the breeders won`t breed `defective` dog parents that can pass down defective genes to their puppy offspring.
If you want a American Hairless Terrier puppy that will grow up to be healthy, make sure that your American Hairless Terrier breeder screens your puppy or your puppy`s parents for the health problems that the OFA recommends for your puppy`s breed. This will increase the chances that your puppy is free from genetic defects.
The following are the health tests that Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) recommends that breeders should screen American Hairless Terriers for:
- Cardiac Evaluation
- Congenital Deafness
- Elbow Dysplasia
- Eye Examination- Annual exams until at least Age 8 yrs (96mo)
- Hip Dysplasia
