The little brown dog was bred on Boykin`s Pine Grove plantation for many years and was thought to be a crossbreed of breeds such as the American Water Spaniel, Springer Spaniel, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and Pointer.

Whit Boykin desired a special breed of hunting dog capable of tracking down wild turkeys and ducks in the Wateree River swamp.

The ideal dog would be small enough to lift into a boat with the retrieved bird, cheerful, capable of navigating water and swamps, and a devoted family dog.

What the Boykin Spaniel Looks Like

A Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized compact dog designed to run over rough terrain and swim in any weather.

Large ears that reach the tip of the nose are covered in long, wavy hair, which is the same waterproof coat that covers the entire body of the Boykin.

While a solid brown coat is the breed`s trademark, they can also be a reddish-brown liver color or a chocolate brown with a small, white spot on the chest.
