Cesky Terrier Breed Overview
The Cesky Terrier is a small-sized dog.
The adult Cesky Terrier stands 10 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder.
The Cesky Terrier belongs to the Terrier Dogs group.
Dogs in the Terrier Dogs group, like the Cesky Terrier, were originally bred to go underground to hunt rodents and other small wild animals (vermin).
Terriers come in a wide range of sizes and shapes, but all terriers are energetic, highly intelligent, and territorial. Terries also have the tendency to escape. They require a securely fenced yard.
The fact that Cesky Terriers belong to the Terrier Dogs group is one of the reasons why Cesky Terriers have the personality and temperament that they have.
The temperament of the Cesky Terrier is generally described as:
- Calm
- Cheerful
- Nonaggressive
- Quiet
- Reserved
- Trainable
History of the Cesky Terrier Breed. Where Cesky Terriers came from
Have you noticed how similar Cesky (pronounced ches-ky) sounds to Czech? That`s because it`s a Czech terrier, developed in 1948 in Czechoslovakia by a Czech breeder named Frantisek Horak.
Horak crossed the Sealyham and Scottish Terriers to create the ideal Bohemian forest hunting dog (which would explain why the occasional Cesky Terrier has Scottish cramp).
The Cesky was bred to be a hunting dog that would track rats and fox to their dens, and Horak wanted to create a breed with a narrow head and chest that would allow the dog to follow prey into the burrow.
Horak was also interested in breeding a well-tempered dog.

What the Cesky Terrier Looks Like
This Terrier resembles the Sealyham Terrier in appearance.
It has short legs and a long body.
The Cesky head is longer and more wedge-shaped than the Sealyham, with bushy brows and a beard.
This dog is adorable from head to tail, with ears that fold down.
When the dog is happy or on the move, the tail is carried horizontally.
The Cesky has almond-shaped brown eyes and a friendly demeanor.
The solid body is agile and light, and the coat is silky and wavy.
The coat is available in brown or gray/blue with tan, gray, white, yellow, or light coffee furnishings.
Cesky puppies are born with a black coat, and it can take up to three years for it to grow out.

The AKC gets the popularity information of a breed from how many dogs of that breed the owners register with the AKC every year. The AKC collects this data for about 200 dog breeds.
The graph below shows the popularity trend of the Cesky Terrier.
The popularity of the Cesky Terrier averaged over the years is Number 184 out of about 200 dog breeds.
Do not get a dog breed just because it is a popular dog breed. And do not reject a dog breed just because it is an unpopular breed.
Health Problems in Cesky Terriers and How to Prevent Them
Every dog breed has its own set of health problems that it tends to develop. There is nothing like a perfect dog breed.
The Cesky Terrier is prone to certain genetic health conditions. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) is an organization that keeps track of genetic health problems in dog breeds.
From the extensive records that the OFA keeps, the OFA knows what health problems each dog breed is naturally prone to develop.
Hence, the OFA recommends which health screening breeders should perform on a dog breed to make sure that the breeders won`t breed `defective` dog parents that can pass down defective genes to their puppy offspring.
If you want a Cesky Terrier puppy that will grow up to be healthy, make sure that your Cesky Terrier breeder screens your puppy or your puppy`s parents for the health problems that the OFA recommends for your puppy`s breed. This will increase the chances that your puppy is free from genetic defects.
The following are the health tests that Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) recommends that breeders should screen Cesky Terriers for:
- Autoimmune thyroiditis
- Cardiac Evaluation
- Dentition
- Eye Examination
- Hip Dysplasia
- Patellar Luxation
- Primary Lens Luxation
