History of the Patterdale Terrier Breed. Where Patterdale Terriers came from
The Patterdale Terrier originated in the United Kingdom.
There were many breeds or types of Terriers at the time, with each district having a different strain of the dog.
These dogs were bred to withstand the harsh Northern English climate and for their working ability rather than their appearance.
The Patterdale Terrier`s origins can be traced back to the Lake District, where Joe Bowman, a Master of Foxhounds, worked to perfect the breed into a feisty, courageous dog capable of taking on fox hunts and with a build that allows them to pursue the fox into its burrow.
The Patterdale Terrier was small enough (and tough enough) to get into the fox burrow, which the larger Foxhounds couldn`t do.

What the Patterdale Terrier Looks Like
Despite its small stature, the Patterdale Terrier has a strong and powerful wedge-shaped head.
The eyes are set widely apart, rounded in shape, and do not protrude, which is essential for an earth working terrier.
Their ears are triangular and fold over, but they are held out from the head, giving the dog a neat alert appearance.
The Patterdale`s neck is strong for its size, well muscled, and blends smoothly into the dog`s shoulders.
The body is proportionate to its size, and the legs are strong and straight.
This breed`s chest is its strongest point; it is firm yet flexible, allowing movement within tight, narrow spaces such as a burrow.

Every dog breed has its own set of health problems that it tends to develop. There is nothing like a perfect dog breed.
The Patterdale Terrier is prone to certain genetic health conditions. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) is an organization that keeps track of genetic health problems in dog breeds.
From the extensive records that the OFA keeps, the OFA knows what health problems each dog breed is naturally prone to develop.
Hence, the OFA recommends which health screening breeders should perform on a dog breed to make sure that the breeders won`t breed `defective` dog parents that can pass down defective genes to their puppy offspring.
If you want a Patterdale Terrier puppy that will grow up to be healthy, make sure that your Patterdale Terrier breeder screens your puppy or your puppy`s parents for the health problems that the OFA recommends for your puppy`s breed. This will increase the chances that your puppy is free from genetic defects.
