History of the King Shepherd Breed. Where King Shepherds came from

This regal canine is a new breed of dog from the United States that is still in its infancy.

Shelley Watts-Cross and David Turkheimer began working on this engaging canine in the early 1990s, using German Shepherds from both America and Europe, as well as Shiloh Shepherds, an emerging breed, and Alaskan Malamutes and Great Pyrenees dogs.

Their goal was to create a dog with the working ability and protective instincts of a German Shepherd, but larger, with fewer health issues, and with a friendlier demeanor.

They have been successful thus far, establishing the official King Shepherd club in 1995.

They have not yet released this dog because it is a rare breed that is still in development.

Health Problems in King Shepherds and How to Prevent Them

The King Shepherd is prone to certain genetic health conditions. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) is an organization that keeps track of genetic health problems in dog breeds.

From the extensive records that the OFA keeps, the OFA knows what health problems each dog breed is naturally prone to develop.

Hence, the OFA recommends which health screening breeders should perform on a dog breed to make sure that the breeders won`t breed `defective` dog parents that can pass down defective genes to their puppy offspring.

If you want a King Shepherd puppy that will grow up to be healthy, make sure that your King Shepherd breeder screens your puppy or your puppy`s parents for the health problems that the OFA recommends for your puppy`s breed. This will increase the chances that your puppy is free from genetic defects.
