History of the Komondor Breed. Where Komondors came from

The Komondors` ancestors can be traced back to the Tibetan dogs.

Some historians believe the dog was brought to Hungary about a thousand years ago by nomadic Magyars to guard their large cattle and sheep herds.

Later research revealed that it originated with the Cumans, a Turkic nomadic people.

Following the Mongol invasion in 1237, many Cumans sought refuge in Hungary, where they joined the branches of Cumans who had settled there prior to the invasion.

Komondor was derived from the name Korman-dor, which meant “dog of the Cumans.

” Researchers discovered the remains of these dogs at the Cuman people`s graves.

The earliest written reference dates from the 16th century.

What the Komondor Looks Like

The Komondor is a sturdy dog with a massive bone structure that is well suited to flock guarding.

They take their responsibilities seriously and will fight to protect those in their care.

Although this breed has a large head, the muzzle is short and dark.

The almond-shaped, dark brown, and medium-sized eyes are hidden beneath their mop-like hair.

Their ears are an elongated triangle shape with a rounded tip that blends in with the rest of the coat.

The tail of the Komondor is long, reaching all the way down to the hocks.

They have strong jaws and teeth that meet in a scissor-like bite.

But it`s their haircoat that`s so intriguing; they`re completely covered from head to toe.
